Viennese Salon in the Epsteinhaus

The magnificent Epsteinhaus is in direct neighbourhood of the castle Belvedere and the Viennese embassy district.

The principal Gustav Epstein was the son of the rich textile manufacturer and textile wholesaler Lazar Epstein. Gustav Epstein also built the Ringstraßen-Palais Epstein, which now belongs to the Austrian parliament.

Father Lazar (in Vienna: Leopold) Epstein owned in Bohemia the biggest cotton-printing factory with more than 1.000 labourers. He was a successful fabric wholesaler as well. In1840 he opened a branch office in Vienna’s Judengasse. He was the chairman of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Vienna.

Son Gustav was with 21 years the manager of the cotton printing factory in Bohemia. After the death of his father Lazar Epstein, he sold the paternal textile company and launched with an estimated capital of 100 million Euros a private bank in Vienna – the Epstein Bank.

Gustav Epstein donated to the Habsburger-monarchy a lot of money for the battle about the dominance in Germany – the war against Prussia. This was lost against Bismarck at the battle of Königsgrätz. Epstein also donated vast amounts of money to a philanthropically foundation for the care of the poor and the orphans. For this he got in 1866 from Emperor Franz Josef the medal of the iron crown and therefore the peerage Gustav Knight of Epstein.
